Joan M. Matthews, PhD

Dr. Joan Matthews was born and raised in the northeast and has spent her adult life in North Carolina and Texas. She was educated at Lake Erie College, the Universite_de Dijon, Kent State University, and the University of Texas at Austin, where she received her doctorate in Counseling Psychology. She did her internship at the University of Texas and at the Austin State Hospital. She has taught psychology and adult learning skills at The University of Texas, St. Edwards University and at Texas State University-usually working with high-risk students. For many years, she worked part-time at the Counseling and Psychological Services Center at The University of Texas and she was also an administrator of a research center at Texas State University. She worked in administration for many years at the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board where she was a director. She has always maintained a private practice in San Marcos. In 1997, she retired from her work at a State level and entered private practice full time as one of the Cedar Creek Associates. Dr. Matthews works with children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families. She also consults with businesses and works with mental health coordination on the San Marcos Critical Incident Debriefing Team at the Police and Fire Departments. In her leisure time, she spends time with her family, her garden and she loves to read.
